Practice & Process: 50+ Years of Experience
With more than 50 years of practice, Mehmet Gürsoy’s portfolio spans a wide range of projects that bring traditional Iznik art into contemporary architectural environments. His work focuses on hand-painted tiles, panels, and ceramic objects for mosques, museums, exhibitions, and private commissions, demonstrating the enduring relevance of Iznik heritage today.
Each project begins with careful design development based on classical Ottoman patterns and proportional principles. Designs are hand-drawn and adapted to the scale, layout, and architectural features of the space before production begins. Clay preparation, forming, drying, glazing, and kiln firing are carried out within the workshop using a meticulous multi-stage process that ensures the clarity of line, colour balance, and surface quality characteristic of Iznik tiles.
Architectural commissions follow a structured studio process, where individual tiles are produced as part of larger compositions designed to integrate with wall panels, domes, Turkish hammams, and Ottoman-inspired interiors. Through this process, the studio combines design expertise with technical precision, allowing complex architectural tile installations to be executed with consistency and durability.
For over five decades, Gürsoy’s studio has sustained the craftsmanship and practice of Iznik tile making, continuing a living tradition rooted in Ottoman ceramic heritage.
